An injured hiker was rescued by helicopter Friday morning after spending the night stranded in the North Shore mountains.

North Shore Rescue said the man set out Thursday morning for a ten-hour hike up Coliseum Mountain with four friends.

The group was still hiking when it got dark and the man slipped and broke his ankle.

Rescuers said the group was not properly prepared for the long trek.

“They had some basic equipment... but didn't have enough light… one headlamp… one bike lamp.” said Doug Pope, manager of North Shore Rescue.

Pope said the hikers tried to continue in the dark but got stuck and the whole group had to be rescued.

The injured man was long-line rescued by helicopter and his friends were walked out.
