THE COLOUR OF YOLKS

Alex wants to know why the eggs she buys at a local farm have completely different colour yolks than the free-range eggs she buys at the grocery store.

The colour of an egg's yolk depends on the diet of the hen. Free-range birds usually produce darker yolks because they have access to more heavily pigmented foods, like green plants, yellow corn and alfalfa.

Diets of wheat or barley produce pale yellow yolks and hens fed white cornmeal produce almost colourless yolks.

OLD MISSING CHILD CASE FEATURED ON ENVELOPE

An envelope featuring a profile of a missing child from more than 70 years ago has received a lot of attention. Marie asks, "Why is such an old missing child case being featured on the back of an envelope, rather than a child who has gone missing more recently?”

Missingkids.ca says they've been contacted by a lot of people asking the same question.

The envelope features nine-year old Richard Marlow. He vanished more than 70 years ago, but his heartbroken family is still searching for answers.

The organization says careful thought goes into how information on a missing child is shared with the public. That includes if the information can be immediately removed if a child is found, to protect his or her privacy. Often in more recent cases, the agency will turn to social media or websites, which can then be updated or taken down.

RESTAURANT INSPECTIONS

The McLaughlin on Your Side team received a lot of feedback about our recent story on health violations at some of Vancouver's top restaurants.

Henry wants to know what the Fraser Health Authority's protocol is on how many times a restaurant gets inspected.

The Fraser Health Authority says environmental health officers conduct inspections on a routine basis, typically two to three times a year.

They'll also go into a restaurant when complaints are received and restaurants with problems will get revisited.

All of the inspection reports are posted here on the Fraser Health Authority's website. You can also look up Vancouver Coastal Health’s inspection reports here.
