A B.C. man’s video selfie showing firefighters rescuing him from a crashed car using the Jaws of Life has gone viral on YouTube.

Andrew MacDonald blacked out behind the wheel and crashed into a power pole in the Vancouver Island community of Duncan on Jan. 11, according to his YouTube post.

In the footage, MacDonald can be seen bloodied but smiling as a crew works to extricate him from the wreckage.

“Why couldn’t I hit it on the passenger side?” he says at one point as the Jaws of Life pries the car open right beside his head.

“I’m getting a lot of feeling in my legs now and it’s [expletive] sore.”

The incredible footage, which captured more than two-and-a-half minutes of the rescue, was uploaded online Sunday and has been viewed more than 300,000 times since.

MacDonald said he broke his femur, both kneecaps, and both ankles in the crash, and spent 14 hours in surgery in Victoria over a number of days.

He announced Sunday he was home again after a month in hospital and is “recovering quickly.”

The RCMP confirmed a green 1993 Honda Accord crashed at Lakes and Tzouhalem roads early in the morning of Jan. 11, but could not comment on the cause due to privacy issues.

Investigators found no evidence that drugs or alcohol were factors, and no charges against MacDonald were pursued.
