North Vancouver police say three people had to be hospitalized over the weekend after intentionally ingesting GHB, the so-called date rape drug.

According to police, staff at a North Vancouver bar called authorities after a woman passed out in their bathroom Saturday night.

When first responders arrived they found two other adults, a man and a woman, also in medical distress after having consumed the same drug, police say.

All three people were rushed to Lions Gate Hospital for treatment, and all needed ventilation to help them breathe. They were released on Sunday.

Police are now trying to track down the source of the drug. GHB, or gamma hydroxybutyrate, is a “powerful, rapidly acting central nervous system depressant” that can pose “significant risks” to health and personal safety, according to North Vancouver RCMP.

According to Health Canada, taking GHB with other central nervous system depressants like alcohol can lead to respiratory arrest and even death.
