An elderly woman has been killed after being knocked from a chairlift platform on Blackcomb Mountain in Whistler, B.C.

Police say the 75-year-old was heading down the mountain on the Solar Express chairlift with her family when she looked back and was struck by an oncoming chair.

"She was looking behind her to orient herself, the chair struck her and she fell from that chair from that loading dock platform to the ground," Sgt. Shawn Lemay told CTV News.

She fell from the raised platform around 3:30 p.m. The woman was airlifted to Whistler Medical Centre but died shortly after.

Police have not released her name, but say she was a Canadian citizen visiting from out of province. She was with five family members at the time of the accident.
