Skiers, hikers and snowmobilers are warned to be extra careful this weekend due to a reported risk of avalanches in most mountainous areas of B.C.

Officials say recreational adventurers face significant danger in the province's backcountry and should take precautions including:

  • Take weather and avalanche forecast conditions into account
  • Carry the proper equipment
  • Leave a trip plan with a friend and stick to it

Since December 2008, avalanches have killed 24 people in B.C., including eight snowmobilers who were killed near Fernie one year ago.

And 2010 isn't proving to be any better. An Alberta man died last Sunday when he was buried in an avalanche near Rossland.
