Assault charges have been laid against a man who allegedly struck an 81-year-old Vancouver man over the head with a glass beer mug in a Downtown Eastside pub Monday.
Jose Manuel Rivas Penate, 43, of no fixed address is charged with assault causing bodily harm and assault with a weapon. He appeared in court Tuesday.
Vancouver police say Penate exited the pub washroom and without warning repeatedly hit the elderly man over the head with the mug in Savoy Pub in the 200-block of E. Hastings Street.
The older man suffered three large gashes to the head and was sent to the hospital for stitches.
