It was the sight of an SUV parked in the middle of the street and a woman in a party dress pacing around that drew two employees of the End Caf out onto East Vancouver's Commercial Drive, Sunday night.

"She was wearing black party dress high heels long hair,'' said witness Chanel Jorsbik.

Holly Houghman said the woman was pacing back and forth, holding her head. "She was really upset,'' Houghman said.

The woman was driving this blue SUV when witnesses say she hit an elderly couple in a crosswalk on Commerical drive.

"According to witnesses it was going at a high rate of speed and ran through a red light,'' said Const. Tim Fanning of Vancouver Police Dept.

A 64-year-old man was hit so hard he ended up half way down the street. He later died in hospital. His wife will survive.

Police are calling this case a hit and run. The driver left her SUV, police say, adding that she didn't wait to be interviewed by investigators.

But witnesses say the woman remained at the scene for some time.

"She was here for quite a while, police didn't arrive until after the ambulance and fire trucks, and even then, I saw one cop car then others came,'' said Houghman.

"I was really shocked to hear it was a hit and run, she stuck around , no vehicle took off,'' she said.

Witnesses say the woman was on scene for at least twenty minutes. There were no police to detain her.

But that doesn't match what police were saying on Monday. They claim officers were there within 11 minutes.

"Everybody knows when you get your drivers license and you are involved in a collision, you've got to wait until the police get there,'' said Fanning.

The driver of the SUV apparently headed towards the Skytrain station and hasn't been seen since.

Police are pretty sure they know who she is. They contacted the male owner of the truck on Monday.
