A notorious United Nations gang member has been convicted of first-degree murder in the death of Vancouver lawyer Marc Rozen nine years ago.

Gangster Michael Newman beat, stabbed and shot Rozen to death at his West End apartment on Jan. 5, 2004, a B.C. Supreme Court Justice ruled Wednesday.

The victim had recently placed a newspaper classified ad to sell an expensive diamond engagement ring. Rozen described the ring as half-bezel set on a platinum band and appraised at $18,000, but offered to sell for $8,900.

The ring was never recovered after his murder.

The case gained international attention after Rozen’s parents enlisted the help of the America’s Most Wanted TV show to solicit new tips in 2007.

Two years later, evidence surfaced that led to Newman being charged.

He is expected to be sentenced Thursday morning.
