Two Chillwack men are facing charges including second-degree murder in the death of a 19-year-old teen camping near Cultus Lake.

Adam Derek Philips, 18, and Justin Wayne Lennard, 19, have been charged after a deadly fight that began when the victim, Cody Gottschalk, was talking about his dreams for the future.

"He didn't deserve this, he had so much going for him, he loved his family," said Gottschalk's cousin, Ashley Bartyik.

"It started over something so small because they heard him say he wanted to be a police officer and make a difference," she said.

Gottschalk loved camping at Cultus Lake. His family had just purchased a site at the Sunnyside Campground. He was with his friends Saturday night.

He told his aunt his was going for a walk -- and 20 minutes later, his family heard the sound of ambulances.

One of Gottschalk's friends was also stabbed, along with a park employee who tried to intervene.

Another teen was assaulted, but not stabbed.

Police say Phillips and Lennard also face charges including assault with a weapon, aggravated assault, assault causing bodily harm, and possession of a weapon.

Another man, 22-year-old Nathan John Simmons of Chilliwack, has been charged with one count of aggravated assault and one of assault causing bodily harm.

The trio wasn't camping at the campsite, and didn't know the victims, police said.

"This person didn't just take away [Gottschalk], he has destroyed so many," said Bartyik. "So many people cared about him and loved him. I'm going to miss his smile."

"He never carried a knife or anything like that," said Gottschalk's grandmother, Anita. "He was a lover, not a fighter, and he was a very intelligent, good-looking boy."
