A transit police officer has been demoted and suspended without pay for 14 days for his part in beating an elderly mentally ill man and jolting him with a Taser.

The incident happened four years ago but an adjudicator has just ordered the punishment for Constable Ken Jansen.

He was taken off the job when the investigation began four years ago and the adjudicator has now ruled Jansen should be penalized for making false statements after the incident at Surrey's hospital, but the report clears the constable of discreditable conduct and abuse of authority.

Criminal charges against Jansen and an RCMP officer who was also involved, were dropped last year when a provincial court judge ruled their charter rights had been infringed by the lengthy delay in bringing the matter to trial.
