The 17-year-old victim of a targeted afternoon shooting in Surrey, B.C., has died in hospital.

According to RCMP investigators, the victim and a friend were sitting in a parked car near the intersection of 124th Street and Boundary Drive South around 12:25 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, when a dark coloured vehicle pulled up alongside and opened fire.

Although the victim's friend fled the car as soon as he heard gunshots, when he noticed that the victim had been shot, he returned to the driver's seat and transported the victim to Surrey Memorial Hospital.

The victim was later transferred to Royal Columbian Hospital, where he died in the late evening.

Surrey RCMP were called to the scene of the shooting after receiving reports of gunshots fired around 12:30 p.m. yesterday.

Witnesses have told investigators that they saw a dark -- possibly green -- vehicle leaving the area on 60th Avenue at the time of the shooting.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has taken over the investigation into the shooting.

Police do not believe the shooting was random, but have not yet determined if the shooting was linked to drugs, gangs or organized crime.

No arrests have been made. Police are not releasing the name of the victim, who was a resident of Surrey.
