A 24-year-old Vancouver Island woman is behind bars after turning herself in to police in connection with a hit-and-run crash that killed a teenage boy this weekend.

Seventeen-year-old Daniel Hopkins was left with serious injuries to his head after he was hit by a car while crossing Boys Road in Duncan on Sunday morning. He died in hospital that night.

"This is a very tragic event, for obvious reasons," RCMP Const. Kevin Day told CTV News.

"Our heart goes out to the family as well as the community."

A Duncan woman showed up at the local RCMP detachment Monday morning and police say she confessed to being involved in the fatal collision. Investigators have seized a suspect vehicle and are recommending a charge of failing to remain at the scene of a crash. The suspect remains in custody.
