Parking rates are about to climb in Vancouver, depending on where and when a space is needed.

Vancouver councillors have approved a new parking program that will set one rate for daytime and another rate for off-peak periods and will hike meter rates by one dollar per hour in areas where meters are occupied at least 85 per cent of the time.

But on blocks where metered spaces are used less than 60 per cent of the time, the city says parking rates will drop by one dollar per hour.

A release from the city says decisions on the number of meters to see higher -- or lower -- rates will be made early next year.
