Anxious students attending Vancouver Island University have one day to relax before returning to class Tuesday for a sprint to complete their semester by the end of the month.

Students at the university's main campus in Nanaimo, B.C., and at regional campuses in Duncan, Parksville and Powell River have been idled since March 10 when classes were cancelled in a labour dispute between V.I.U. and its faculty association.

A pact was reached late Sunday and the university confirms all classes will resume Tuesday, calming student fears that the entire semester would be scrapped if an agreement was not in place the beginning of this week.

The almost 19,000 full and part-time students at the four campuses will now have less than three weeks to complete their semester.

A release from the university says the term will conclude April 29 and the summer session will run as scheduled.

The faculty association and university will continue mediated talks to resolve two outstanding items before finalizing the latest contract.
