A stand-off with an armed suspect at a Cloverdale rooming house has ended after more than six hours with the arrest of a man wanted on a Canada-wide warrant.
Police negotiators in Surrey, B.C., had been negotiating with a man holed up inside the White Hotel near 176 Street and 57 Avenue since 1 p.m. on Monday.
A police tactical team, including a tank and canine units, sealed off the area and ordered neighbours to stay inside.
Sources have told CTV News that police were attempting to serve a warrant to 47-year-old Robert John Anderson, who recently walked away from a Vancouver halfway house.
Police have not confirmed Anderson's identity.
According to an RCMP press release, police had been called to the Cloverdale rooming house to investigate a theft. When they arrived, they learned that a man wanted on a nationwide warrant could be inside one of the rooms.
Negotiators spoke with the man, who police believed was armed and dangerous.
Around 7:30 p.m., Carol Stone, who works nearby at Cloverdale Computers, said police told her that it was finally safe to go outside.
"There was a knock on the door, and they told me that we could unlock the door," Stone told ctvbc.ca.
She said that shortly before the stand-off ended, she saw the suspect climb out of a second storey building, where officers were waiting.
"He was motioning that he had no weapons," Stone said.
