A suspect shot by Mounties following a fatal stabbing in Burnaby early Sunday morning has died in hospital.

Officers were called to a property on 14th Avenue, described by neighbours as a rooming house, shortly before 6 a.m. with a report of a double-stabbing.

They found one victim dead at the scene and another suffering undisclosed injuries.

Mounties also located a suspect, described only as an adult male, and tried to arrest him. B.C.'s police watchdog, the Independent Investigations Office, confirmed officers opened fire during the incident, but few other details have been confirmed.

The suspect was taken to hospital, where he has since been pronounced dead.

No officers were hurt during the confrontation.

The IIO, which is responsible for probing all serious or deadly uses of police force in B.C., is investigating the shooting, while the RCMP and Integrated Homicide Investigation Teams are probing the stabbings.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
