A small earthquake has been recorded off the B.C. coast but it wasn't strong enough to wake residents of northern Vancouver Island or Haida Gwaii.

The U.S. Geological Survey reports the quake occurred at 1:43 a.m. Monday and had a 4.6 magnitude.

Officials say it didn't pack enough punch to be felt in the Vancouver Island town of Port Hardy, 185 kilometres to the northeast.

A smaller earthquake was also recorded minutes later, off southern Alaska.

The 3.5 quake was reported at 1:48 a.m., 85 kilometres northwest of Anchorage.

The geological survey says it was almost 70 kilometres below the surface and was not strong enough to cause any damage.
