Gallagher, Manning score twice as Giants defeat Winterhawks 7-3

VANCOUVER - Brendan Gallagher and Neil Manning each had two goals, leading the Vancouver Giants to a 7-3 win over the visiting Portland Winterhawks in Western Hockey League action Saturday night.

Gallagher added an assist, while Craig Cunningham had a goal and three helpers in the victory. Lance Bouma and Sebastian Svendsen also scored for the B.C. Division-leading Giants (16-8-3).

Ty Rattie, Luke Walker, and Riley Boychuk had goals for the Winterhawks (16-10-0).

Both Mark Segal for the Giants and Mac Carruth for the Winterhawks were playing their first WHL games in goal. Segal was just acquired by the Giants from Nanaimo Clippers of the British Columbia Hockey League and earned third star of the game honours for his 27 saves. Carruth stopped 18-of-25 in a losing effort.

The win snapped a two-game skid by the Giants, while the 'Hawks have now lost two in a row.

The first quality chance of the game was by the Winterhawks at the tail end of their first power play, but Spencer Bennett was robbed twice in front of the net at point blank but couldn't beat Segal.

Rockets blank Cougars on the road

PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. -- Adam Brown made 25 saves to earn his 12th victory and third shutout of the season and back the Kelowna Rockets to a 2-0 win over the Prince George Cougars in Western Hockey League action Saturday night.

Kyle St. Denis and Cody Chikie scored for Kelowna (12-13-1).

Alex Wright took the loss for the Cougars (4-18-2), facing 32 shots.

The Rockets avenged their 3-2 loss Friday in Prince George, which snapped a nine-game Cougars' losing streak.

Brown, a native of Yorba Linda, Calif., had an easy time of it in the third period, as the Rockets out-shot the Cougars 19-5 in the final frame.

Wiebe scores in shootout, LeClerc makes 40 saves as Blazers beat Bruins

CHILLIWACK, B.C. -- Shayne Wiebe scored the shootout winner and Justin LeClerc made 40 saves as the Kamloops Blazers beat the Chilliwack Bruins 4-3 in Western Hockey League action Saturday.

Tyler Shattock, C.J. Stretch and Tyler Hansen scored in regulation for Kamloops (11-13-3).

Brandon Manning, Jamie Crooks and Roman Horak replied for Chilliwack (11-12-5), which got 22 saves from Mark Friesen.
