A Ridge Meadows RCMP officer will make a court appearance in Port Coquitlam on June 14 in relation to a charge of assault causing bodily harm.

Const. Mike Cardinal was charged in connection with an on-duty incident that happened while he was trying to make an arrest, police said in a statement.

On February 21, 2008, Const. Cardinal was one of several officers responding to a complaint about a loud party in Maple Ridge. Cardinal tried to arrest a man, who allegedly resisted arrest. Const. Cardinal then allegedly struck the male with a flashlight, causing facial injuries.

According to the RCMP, a separate Code of Conduct investigation was initiated to examine Const. Cardinal's actions and use of force and he will be facing a disciplinary hearing. His duty status was reviewed and he has remained on active duty since this incident.

Cardinal is the second B.C. Mountie to face assault charges this month. On May 19, Const. Imran Saeed was charged after a female complainant alleged she was assaulted by the officer during a traffic violation stop in February 2009.

Saeed is also facing two other counts of assault from an undisclosed on-duty incident that happened sometime in May 2009.
