Residents of 50 condo units are homeless, but uninjured, after a massive fire tore through a four-storey apartment building in Kelowna, B.C. on Saturday night.

About 40 firefighters arrived to fight the blaze at 660 Lequime Road at around 10:30 p.m. The fire, which started on the fourth floor, quickly spread to the attic, engulfing the roof in flames.

"There were flames coming out like 20, 30 feet high and at that point we just said ‘get out,'" said John Bernard, a resident of the building.

Firefighters said that most of the damage is on the fourth floor of the building but there is significant water and smoke damage to the rest of the building.

"The whole top floor was all in big flames and people started yelling," said Laurie Shortreed, a resident of the building.

No one was injured in the fire and all residents were evacuated and taken to the Salvation Army building at 1480 Sutherland Avenue.

The Kelowna Fire department is holding an information meeting on Saturday night for the displaced residents at 6:00 p.m.

The cause of the blaze is still being investigated.
