A community volunteer picking up trash off a roadside in West Kelowna was killed Thursday morning after been struck by a pickup truck.
Mounties say the 74-year-old was hit by a green GMC pickup that veered onto the shoulder of Shannon Lake Road at around 8:30 a.m.
"It's an absolute tragedy," said Const. Steve Holmes, who added that the man was wearing a reflective vest at the time.
The victim was critically injured in the crash and taken to Kelowna General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The driver, a 34-year-old man, was not injured.
Mounties say visibility was good at the time of the crash and speed and alcohol were not factors. Investigators will be looking into whether the driver was distracted either on a cell phone or otherwise, Holmes said.
"With no other factors, you'd expect a driver should be able to keep their vehicle on the road," he said.
Potential mechanical failures in the vehicle will also be explored, Holmes added.
