Mounties say they will not comment on unconfirmed media reports that officers did not intervene in a potentially dangerous sexual encounter between two detainees at the Kamloops RCMP detachment earlier this month.
Police announced on Friday that four officers and three municipal staff were under investigation in connection with an undisclosed incident that occurred in the jail cell block on Aug. 18.
Media reports suggest that two female inmates, one who may be HIV positive, had a sexual encounter and that on duty officers did not intervene.
Staff Sgt. Garry Kerr provided few details about the allegations, but confirmed that Mounties from outside Kamloops would be investigating.
"[The officers and staff] are obviously entitled to a thorough investigation, as is anybody that's accused of anything," Kerr said.
Police have confirmed that one of the detainees involved in the incident is the subject of a criminal investigation.
More information will be made available as soon as possible, Kerr added.
"With all the hits we've taken in recent months and years, I mean the public has a right to know certain things."
The probe is being conducted by the E Division Serious Crimes Unit and the RCMP's Professional Standards Unit from Vancouver.
Other Kamloops Mounties under investigation
A further two officers with the Kamloops detachment are currently under investigation by the Calgary Police Service after the shooting death of Wilbert Bartley on July 30.
Bartley, 50, was shot and killed after he backed his Toyota 4Runner into an unmarked RCMP minivan parked near a convenience store in the 200-block of Tranquille Road.
Calgary investigators say that the two plainclothes Mounties fired two shots through the SUV's windshield, hitting Bartley at least once.
Another pair of Kamloops Mounties remains off regular duty while they face charges of assault for separate incidents.
Const. Ryan Sheremetta has been charged with one count of assault for allegedly punching another man in an off-duty street fight on March 7. He has been placed on administrative duties while an internal police investigation is underway.
