RCMP are investigating an apparent arson attempt at the force's detachment in Queen Charlotte, B.C.

Cpl. Dan Moskaluk says the on-duty cell guard interrupted a man after he broke a window and fled the scene.

He says evidence left behind at about 9 p.m. on Friday suggests the suspect intended to cause a fire.

Moskaluk says a jug of gasoline and a marine-type flare were also found lying on the floor inside the detachment, below the broken window.

He says a search failed to turn up the suspect, who was wearing a knit tuque and matching sweater.

Moskaluk says the man may have smelled of gas, which was spilled at the scene.
