Police in Abbotsford, B.C. are investigating a suspicious overnight fire that has destroyed a condominium building still under construction.

Just before midnight Tuesday, emergency crews were called to the 1700 block of McCallum Rd. in response to a fire at a new condo development.

When crews arrived, they found the wood-framed structure fully engulfed in flames.

Police evacuated several homes and businesses as a result of the intense heat, which caused some damage to neighbouring structures. Power in the area was also affected after a transformer caught fire.

Despite the best efforts of nearly 100 Abbotsford fire and rescue personnel, it appears the building is a complete loss, Abbotsford Police said in a release.

Damage is expected to be valued in the millions of dollars.

There are no reported injuries. The fire is being treated as suspicious and investigators will likely be on scene for most of Wednesday and for days to come as they sift through the scene.
