The professional standards section of the Abbotsford police are investigating a dropped 911 call from an apartment after a woman was found dead in the home the next morning.

Dispatchers received a 911 call from an apartment in the 33300 block of Mayfair Avenue in Abbotsford on March 24th at approximately 7:55 p.m., but the line was then disconnected.

The dispatcher called back and eventually spoke to a man at the residence, who said the call had been a mistake.

The dispatcher determined no one in the residence was in any distress, and an emergency response was not required.

Hendrikje Priester, 52, was found dead at approximately 7:30 a.m. the next morning.

Her husband, Daniel Raymond Casgrain, has been charged with second degree murder.

Const. Casey Vinet said Abbotsford Police are reviewing the audio recordings to determine if the correct procedure was followed.

"We'll be looking to see that the operator followed procedures correctly and see if there's anything differently that we could have done in terms of our response at that time," he said.

The findings of the review will be made public provided they do not jeopardize any future court proceedings, but it is unclear how long the review will take.

The issue is raising questions about the prevention of domestic violence among women's groups.

Dozens of representatives from various groups met in Vancouver on Thursday to address how police respond to violence, especially domestic violence, in emergency situations.

Louisa Russell of the Vancouver Rape Relief and Women's Shelter said Priester's death could have been prevented.

"Again, there's another preventable death," she said. "It looks very much like the police could have intervened and made a difference, and yet again they didn't. We'll be looking to see if the operator followed procedures correctly and see if there's something different we could have done in terms of our response at that time."

Several years ago, domestic abuse survivor Gayle Hull called 911 for help, but police did return her call.

"When I called 911 on June 8, 2004, they did not respond to my call, either," she said. "As a result, I was seriously injured."

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team is investigating Priester's death.
