What started out as an ordinary traffic stops in North Delta turned into something quite different and it left many motorists wondering, what the heck just happened? Instead of being left with a ticket they all left with smiles.
The Delta Police Department joined forces with CTV News to help spread holiday cheer and Pay it Forward. The DPD team, which included Police Chief Neil Dubord, Const. Sarah Swallow and Const. Grayson Smith, pulled over drivers for what appeared to be a traffic stop. But instead of handing out tickets, the surprised motorists received gifts.
"Do you know why we stopped you today?" Chief Dubord asked Balgit Mann, “We're looking at offences of the Motor Vehicle Act and you've been stopped for section Ho, Ho, Ho."
“I can’t believe it,” said a stunned Mann.
“Holy cow,” laughed Darren on another traffic stop, “I think I want to get pulled over again.”
No call is too small for Delta police and when CTV News asked the department to join us, the top brass on down rallied to spread the holiday spirit. They shopped for gifts and wrapped them up.
The Delta Police Foundation provided the money for the gifts which included everything from $100 gift certificates for White Spot to board games from London Drugs and Vancouver Giants tickets.
And each motorist also received a $25 gift card for groceries and were asked to Pay it Forward by giving it to someone else.
“Absolutely. I’ll give it to a stranger,” said Melissa.
Each person was given a card as a reminder.
It reads: "Today someone did something nice for you. Through the holidays CTV invites you to share acts of kindness by paying it forward. Let's help create a positive movement in our communities. Do something nice for someone else and share your stories, pictures and videos with us. Let's get something started!"
"In 30 years of being a police officer that I can say it's the best feeling that I’ve been able to have," said Chief Dubord.
And thanks to the Delta Police Department for making it all happen.
