B.C. has officially opened a new high tech laboratory designed to investigate animal-borne diseases like the H-I-N-1 flu and avian flu.

Agriculture Minister Steve Thomson says the $14 million lab in Abbotsford, B.C. will allow scientists to deliver faster test results for a quick response to any disease outbreaks.

In addition to animal flu testing, the lab can also test for mad cow disease and the West Nile virus.

Thomson says the lab has the most advanced equipment, including a secure containment system to protect researches and guard against an accidental release of any virus.
