A 65-year-old Vancouver Island man is dead after an SUV crashed into his motorcycle on the Malahat Highway Monday afternoon.

Mounties believe the SUV was turning onto the highway from Shawnigan Lake Road when it struck him around 4 p.m.

The motorcyclist was severely injured and couldn’t be saved, despite paramedics’ efforts at the scene and en route to hospital.

“Our thoughts are with this man’s family and friends,” Sgt. Scott Stephen said in a statement.

The deceased’s name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin but the RCMP confirmed he lived in Langford.

The SUV driver, a 41-year-old Victoria woman, was not injured in the collision.

An RCMP Collision Analyst was called to conduct a detailed investigation into the cause of the crash, which closed part of the highway for almost two hours.

The BC Coroners Service has also been notified.
