Registered sex offender Gerald McLean has been found and arrested near McBride, B.C., after going missing from a Vancouver halfway house last week.

The 41-year-old had been out on statutory release, serving out the last of his sentence in the community under supervision, when he failed to appear at the halfway house on April 14.

Vancouver police released a public plea for assistance in locating him, and warned that McLean, who has a history of sexual assault against children, was at high risk to reoffend.

According to a release from RCMP in McBride, about 200 kilometres southeast of Prince George, the detachment received tips from the public that McLean was staying on an undeveloped property nearby.

Police searched a temporary camp set up on that property on Saturday, and found McLean on a road, allegedly holding a rifle, which is in violation of the conditions of his sentence.

He is now being held in custody in Prince George. The RCMP say they are likely recommend firearm charges against him.
