Vancouver residents living near the newly renovated BC Place say the stadium's massive video screen is flooding their homes with light late at night, and the city may be powerless to stop it.
Ben Simons, who lives in a residential tower on Georgia Street, says apartments don't even need to face the screen directly to be affected.
"The light is rebounding off other buildings and back into ours," Simons said. "Even with the lights off and the blinds closed, it's still bright in our place."
Advertisements on a white background are especially problematic, he added. "It's like a flash of lightning every time they come on."
PAVCO, the stadium's operator, has said the screen was merely being tested, and won't be running so late at night. Some locals have reported seeing it lit up past midnight.
Mayor Gregor Robertson said the city is looking into what can be done about the screen, but admits Vancouver's city signage bylaws may not fall apply.
"The jumbotrons on BC Place are actually on provincial land," Robertson said. "Our staff are looking at whether they're in compliance or not, but ultimately the province can do what they want."
The huge screen is part of the stadium's $563-million renovation, which was completed on Friday.
