Police say a 25-year-old man is dead following a shooting during a suspected attempted break-in at a marijuana grow-op in Langley, B.C. Friday night.

Shortly before 9:30 p.m. police received a 911 call about a man shot in the area of 16 Avenue and 272 Street, Sgt. Jennifer Pound told CTV News. On their way, police were flagged down by two men at 24 Avenue and 272 Street who led officers to an unresponsive man in the backseat of a vehicle.

The man was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police have since identified him as Cory Kelly.

Pound said police believe Kelly was with a group of people who were trying to break into a residence containing a marijuana grow-op in the 900-block of 272 Street.

"It's a case of a break and enter gone bad," Pound said. "At this point it doesn't appear that there are any gang links to this, but it does appear to be linked to criminal activity."

She told reporters the men who flagged down police knew Kelly and were his associates.

Investigators say they are trying to find the owner and occupants of the residence and are talking to several persons of interest. No arrests have been made.

Pound said Kelly was known to police and had a criminal history possibly coming out of Ontario. She also warned about the dangers linked to marijuana grow-ops.

"Marijuana grow operations pose a risk to the public in general, to our communities," she said. "We know that where there are marijuana grow operations, there is a heightened illegal activity that go on there, and this is an example of that."
