The first of two men charged in a disturbing and deadly sword attack in East Vancouver has been released on bail.

Amritpal Dhillon was freed on $450,000 bail Monday and ordered to live with his family and check in with a supervisor every week.

The young man also can’t possess weapons or use alcohol or drugs.

Dhillon is charged with second-degree murder in the shocking death of 19-year-old Manraj Akalirai on Jan. 24.

Police say the teenager was swarmed on Elgin Street near 47th Avenue by a group of men who viciously attacked him with bats, clubs and a sword, then left him to die in the road.

Akalirai survived long enough to be loaded into an ambulance but died en route to hospital.

A second young man, Amritpaul Rakha, is charged with manslaughter.
