The BC Lions announced Tuesday evening that the club has signed safety Jason Arakgi to a contract extension.

Terms of the deal were not released.

Arakgi racked up 35 special teams tackles in 2009 to tie a club record and received the West Division award for most outstanding special teams player.

"Jason has become an integral part of our special teams unit and I know he's is going to continue to develop his skill set in seasons to come," Lions GM and head coach Wally Buono said in a statement.

The Montreal native suffered a season-ending injury with only three games left in the season. Despite the injury, Arakgi still earned a West Division all-star selection for the first time in his career.

"I am thrilled about the extension," Arakgi said in a statement. "I am proud to be a Lion and I have enjoyed every aspect of my time here from playing in front the CFL's best fans to taking part in community programs during the off-season.

"The West Coast has become my home and this extension makes me even more excited about the season ahead."
