Police in Victoria say they are dealing with two disturbing pranks after discovering two separate shoes with what appeared to be human remains inside.
The first shoe was found in McNeill Bay in Oak Bay around 5 p.m. Monday.
Around an hour later another person spotted a shoe beside the Oak Bay Marina, about two kilometres away, with what also looked like human remains.
The shoes actually contained meat, say police.
Investigators say they will now be looking for those responsible for the hoax.
"The fact that someone would go to this extent to do a hoax is something that we take very seriously as police and I know the community does as well," said Staff Sgt. Davinder Dalep.
The foot hoaxes may have been perpetrated as part of a back to school ritual called Endurance Night, a non-sanctioned school event where current and former Oak Bay High School students routinely commit pranks.
But these latest hoaxes come just a week after a shoe containing a human foot and leg bone were found near the Plaza of Nations in Vancouver's False Creek.
The woman's shoe was the 11th with human remains to be found on B.C. and Washington State shores since 2007. Coroners have confirmed the identity of four of the seven feet found in B.C.
So far, police say foul play isn't suspected in connection with any of the feet, which are believed to have detached naturally in the water.
