A 52-year-old woman is dead and a 23-year-old man is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after a double shooting on a rural road Chilliwack Friday night.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has been called to handle the case, which was first reported shortly before 8 p.m. in the area of the 48000-block of Chilliwack Central Road, near Banford Road.

Chilliwack RCMP responded to reports of shots fired and found the two victims. The woman succumbed to her injuries at the scene, police said. The man was transported to hospital by BC Ambulance.

Cpl. Meghan Foster, of IHIT, told reporters the shooting appears to be targeted, not random. Officers blocked off a very large area for their investigation, and Foster could not say when the scene would be re-opened to the public.

She said the female victim was a Chilliwack resident, and the male victim was from Surrey. Neither of them had a criminal record, and police believe they knew each other, Foster said.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the IHIT tip line at 877-551-4448, or to contact Crime Stoppers to report information anonymously.

“The investigation is in its infancy, and we’re still gathering evidence,” Foster said. “What we’re hoping is that the public will come forward and help us basically figure out what happened to these two individuals.”
