VANCOUVER - James Henry made sure the Edmonton Oil Kings' slide down the standings continued Sunday night.
Henry scored the winning goal at 16:48 of the third period as the Vancouver Giants beat Edmonton 4-2 in Western Hockey League play, sending the Oil Kings to their sixth-straight loss. Kevin Connaughton, Mitch Spooner, with his first WHL goal also scored, while Lance Bouma added another into an empty net with one second left for the Giants (13-6-3).
Working a give-and-go with J.T. Barnett at the Edmonton blue-line, Henry beat Oil Kings goaltender Torrie Jung with a wrist shot over his glove hand.
Michael St. Croix and Rhett Rachinski scored for the Oil Kings (7-11-5).
The Oil Kings went 1-for-6.
Both teams were playing their third game in three nights and fatigue was evident as they generated few scoring chances in the first two periods. The opening frame was scoreless and the game was tied 1-1 after 40 minutes.
Vancouver goaltender Jamie Tucker stopped Rachinski on a penalty shot at 15:36 of the first period after Rachinski blocked Connaughton's slapshot at the Edmonton blue-line and raced in on goal with the Giants defenceman hooking him.
Later in the first, the Giants had a two-man advantage for a 1:26. Brett Breitkreuz drew a goaltender interference penalty as he sent Tucker flying into his net, and Brent Raedeke shot the puck over the glass to take a delay-of-game call but the Giants couldn't capitalize.
Elsewhere, Seattle beat Chilliwack 2-1.
