The Surete du Quebec is investigating after the body of a woman in her 40s was found Sunday afternoon on an island just west of Montreal.

The woman's body was spotted in a snowbank by a passerby at about 12 p.m. on Ile Dowker, between Notre-Dame-de-l'Ile-Perrot and Ste.-Anne-de-Bellevue.

Police say there were no marks of violence found on the woman. She was lightly dressed considering the freezing temperatures, said SQ spokesperson Daniel Thibaudeau. A backpack containing some belongings was found with the woman.

Police could not confirm how long her body had been there before it was discovered.

The woman's body was taken to hospital as police try to determine her identity.
