Parking giant Impark is getting into the holiday spirit by waiving unpaid parking tickets for people who make a toy donation to the Salvation Army.
From 7 to 11 a.m. on Thursday Impark is having a "Ticket for Toy" swap in downtown Vancouver, Kamloops, Kelowna and Prince George. Anyone with an unpaid ticket can have it waived by making a toy or gift donation to one of four Salvation Army locations. One gift will waive one ticket, and 10 gifts will waive 10 tickets – a pretty good deal.
The Salvation Army is looking for puzzles, books, DVDs and CDs, preferably for teens and pre-teens – the age range that is often overlooked during holiday donations.
"Everyone gets excited about the little teddy bears and cute baby toys but there are lots of kids out there in need who are growing up and turning into teenagers and wouldn't really appreciate those," said Lauren Chan of the Salvation Army.
The charity hopes that people will donate gifts that are of equal value to their unpaid parking ticket.
"If someone brings a $2 item that's just not going to work," Chan said.
Donors are asked to bring in a copy of their violation notices, statements or their licence plate numbers.
Here's a list of the drop-off locations:
- Vancouver: 555 Homer St. between Dunsmuir and Pender
- Kamloops: 344 Poplar St.
- Kelowna: 1480 Sutherland Ave.
- Prince George: 777 Ospika Blvd. South
