Extraordinary amounts of rain hammered areas of northern B.C. Saturday, flooding homes and businesses and washing out bridges and roads.
The BC River Forecast Centre says the rainfall follows two days of heavy showers that delivered between 40 and 150 millimetres of rain to areas around Fort St. John.
The centre estimates between 10 and 40 millimeters more will have fallen in the Peace River and Williston Lake regions by Sunday.
Highway 97 south of Chetwynd has been closed, cutting off access to the Peace region, and Highway 29 has been shut down from Chetwynd to Hudson's Hope.
In Dawson Creek, trailers had to be pulled from a lake that sprung up virtually overnight at a full-service RV Park and water occupies much of the city.
Many are calling it the worst flooding they've ever seen, though mayor Mike Bernier confirmed no injuries have yet been reported.
"It's quite ironic that last year we didn't have any rain at all," Bernier said. "It's from one extreme to another, so you can never trust what Mother Nature is going to throw at you."
A rainfall warning for the Peace region remains in effect. The River Forecast Centre will be providing updates on conditions and stream flow information at its website.
