A flood warning has been issued in B.C.'s central and southern Peace region where heavy rainfall has closed Highway 52 between Dawson Creek and Tumbler Ridge.

The Transportation Ministry said Saturday that rain caused extensive damage to a section of the highway, about 26 kilometres south of Arras.

Travellers were advised to use a detour via Highway 29 at Chetwynd.

The ministry said 80 millimetres of rain had fallen in the area since Friday, and highway crews were monitoring conditions to determine repair options.

Areas near Tumbler Ridge were expected to get up to 25 millimetres of rain by Saturday night.

Meanwhile, Highway 16, about 77 kilometres east of Prince George, was closed in both directions Saturday due to heavy rain.

"The streamflows were just too high for the culvert to handle," said Mike Lorimer, regional director for the Transportation Ministry.

"The culvert's still working, it's passing all the water, but there's just too much flow and that extra water backed up and it's gone over the road."

Lorimer said rainfall had slowed since Friday and that showers were expected later Saturday.

Public Safety Minister Shirley Bond has said the province's emergency program is on high alert as weather could pose a significant danger for communities such as Dawson Creak, Tomslake and Gundy.

Two weeks ago, rainstorms washed out parts of Highway 97 between Chetwynd and Mackenzie Junction, with the road opening last Wednesday.
