A large section of Vancouver's downtown core was without power Monday after an underground BC Hydro transmitter caught fire, blowing out a manhole cover. Traffic in the area was being disrupted by a lack of power available to traffic lights and downtown businesses.
South Coast British Columbia Transportation Authority (Translink) issued a statement saying that the power outage is affecting Waterfront Station.
Due to the B.C. Hydro power problem somewhere in the vicinity of Waterfront Station, the station has been evacuated until further notice, Translink said.
However, it said SeaBus and SkyTrain customers are being allowed in, and both services are still running.
As a result, Translink said bus service is affected and seriously delayed, with trolley services being re-routed away from the area of Harbour Centre
It is not known whether West Coast Express will be affected, however telephone and email systems are out of service at this time.
