The former home of a Vancouver Canucks alumnus, currently on the market for $3.1 million, was burned to the ground in an overnight fire Friday.

The large heritage farmhouse in south Surrey caught fire sometime around 4 a.m.

Surrey Fire Battalion Chief Richard McPhee told CTV News most of the second and third-storey of the home was fully engulfed when crews arrived. Flames were so intense the house collapsed.

All six occupants inside escaped safely. They are staying with relatives.

The four-bedroom house, 3,195 square foot home sits on a waterfront lot backing onto the Nicomekyl River.

Investigators remained on the property Friday morning to determine the cause of the fire.

Neighbours say the structure was built in the late 1800's and was once the home of Ryan Walter, who played his last two seasons in the NHL with the Vancouver Canucks.
