Ferry travellers hoping to commute between Tsawwassen and Duke Point Tuesday may be in for a wait after a fire cancelled several sailings.
A fire in the bow thruster compartment of the Queen of New Westminster erupted at around 10:15 a.m. on a sailing bound for Duke Point. The fire supression system put out the blaze and the sprinklers were activated on the car decks.
No one was injured in the fire.
It is not known what caused the blaze or how long the ferry will be out of service.
The vessel returned to Tsawwassen and foot passengers were evacuated but the vehicles remain on board.
The Queen of New Westminster -- built in 1964 -- was taken out of service during the May long weekend when it had problems with a rudder and a cooling system.
