Police say the man fatally shot in downtown Vancouver Thursday night was carrying a loaded handgun when he was attacked.

They say Milad Nournia, a 26-year-old-Vancouver resident, is well known to police and believe his death is targeted. Investigators are now looking into any gang links.

Police teams swarmed the 1000-block of Hornby Street around 8:30 p.m. Thursday after multiple people called 911 to report hearing shots fired.

The wounded man staggered into a Subway restaurant looking for help but collapsed moments later. He was transported to hospital where he died shortly after.

Witnesses reported hearing between three and five "very loud" gunshots. Several people at the scene told CTV News they saw one man jump into a van that drove away.

This is the second shooting in Vancouver in less than a week.

Last Sunday, a 32-year-old bouncer at a Granville Street nightclub was shot in the leg after getting into a fight with one of the patrons.
