An Abbotsford police officer has been suspended on allegations he drunkenly crashed an unmarked police vehicle earlier this month.
Const. Ian MacDonald says the off-duty officer was driving home on April 14 when he collided with a pole, damaging the vehicle's bumper and front passenger side.
He reported the incident the next day, but his account is being investigated for accuracy.
"The two issues being tackled are whether he drove while impaired, and whether he supplied an explanation that was inaccurate," MacDonald said. "Both could have criminal ramifications."
The officer, whose name has not been released, has worked in the department for four and a half years.
He was suspended indefinitely with pay. MacDonald said the police board has the ability to upgrade the suspension to unpaid at any time.
The Office of the Police Complaints Commissioner has been advised and a criminal investigation, conducted by the Abbotsford Police Department, is ongoing.
