Mounties expect to lay criminal charges against the man behind the wheel during a car crash that took the lives of two teenage girls near Fort Nelson on Wednesday night.

Police say the 1991 Nissan 300ZX lost control on the Old Alaska Highway, veered off the road and flipped upside-down into a ditch around 7:45 p.m.

Four of the people in the car were not wearing seat belts and were ejected from the sports car. The fifth passenger, who was wearing his seat belt, walked away from the crash with only minor injuries.

Two teenage girls, aged 15 and 16, died of their injuries.

Another 16-year-old girl was transported to the Prince George Regional Hospital, where she was treated for serious injuries.

The driver, a 24-year-old Burnaby resident, was taken unresponsive and unconscious to hospital. He is expected to recover. The man is wanted on a warrant in Alberta.

Mounties say drugs and alcohol are factors in the crash. The vehicle has been impounded while Mounties investigate.

Students that attend the high school of the young victims are being offered counselling.

Anyone who witnessed the crash, or may have encountered the vehicle or its occupants beforehand, is asked to call police investigators in Fort Nelson at 250-774-3883.
