Two people are dead after a car crashed through a concrete barricade and down an embankment just north of the Cassiar Tunnel in East Vancouver early Tuesday morning.

Investigators believe the vehicle breached the retaining wall of an on-ramp at around 1:30 a.m. and slid down the hill before coming to rest at the edge of the northbound lanes of Highway 1.

Officers arrived to find the male driver, who was ejected from the car, and a female passenger both dead at the scene. Their deaths mark the city's sixth and seventh traffic-related fatalities of 2012.

Neither victim has been identified.

Police say speed appears to be a factor, but it's too soon to say whether alcohol contributed to the crash.

Any witnesses are asked to call the Vancouver Police Collision Investigation Unit at 604-717-3012 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
