The long wait for justice is almost over for the family of a teen killed in a Port Coquitlam hit-and-run.

An agreed statement of fact was presented in court on Wednesday, three years after Annie Leung was fatally struck as she walked home from school.

The statement revealed that the accused, Irwin Franz, lied to police two days after the fatal crash. He told a police officer that he was at Costco when the crash occurred and he only knew about the incident from what he saw on the news.

The Crown has asked for four to six months in jail for leaving the scene of the deadly crash, while Franz's lawyers recommend a fine of $2,000 to $3,000, and no jail time.

In court on Wednesday Franz stood up and apologized to the family who was also in the courtroom.

He said he panicked, was in shock and is sincerely sorry.

The victim’s mother read a tearful victim impact statement telling the court that this tragedy has destroyed her identity of being a mother.

The judge will deliver his sentence on June 20.
