Usually it's firefighters who rescue cats, but over the weekend in Vancouver it was the police.

Officers were called out after witnesses said a man was strangling a cat in the downtown area.

The officers found a man slamming a plastic bag containing the cat against the wall of a building.

The cat, named Herman, was rescued and is being cared for by the SPCA.

Herman's owner, 63-year-old Harold Aubrey Borgal, was arrested and charged with animal cruelty.
